Attaining and Protecting Your Professional Nursing License
I intend to become licensed by examination in the state of Maine. Maine is a state that is considered a nursing licensure compact state. Compact states allow nurses to easily practice across borders of other compact states. In the state of Maine applications for licensure can be done on the Maine.gov website, this application requires a signed page from our nursing department stating that we did pass all our classes and graduated BSN. Yes, the state of Maine does require a background check as well as fingerprinting. This is something that is only good for 90 days so when applying for licensure we need to make sure we have our passing NCLEX test within that time frame. There is a $75 licensure fee for the state of Maine.
A person with substance abuse issues may seek help without the Board’s knowledge and can be done before a report is made to the Board about the matter. The board has a contract with the Medical Professionals Health Program. Mandatory reporting is required by the state if Maine, the board need to be notified within 60 days when a nurse privileges become revoked by employment or the nurse is under investigation related to a clinical competence or unprofessional conduct. Nurses dealing with problems such as these gives the nurse an opportunity to enter alternative management groups to help aid them in the recovery process. Nurses are held reliable for any damage or harm that is caused while working under the influence of substances. They are given a leave off of work to attend these management groups, then offered back into their position once they are cleared and deemed safe to return to work. To protect myself and my license, I will ensure I keep up to date on all policies and regulations of my facility and make sure to abide by those rules set in place. I will be sure to utilize all of the resources that are available to me in order to perform to the best of my abilities and provide the highest quality of care possible. I will also make sure if I do see something or some other healthcare provider including nurses do anything that could be counted as malpractice or neglect I will report it.
